Street Fighter 6 Officially Announced

For all of you Street Fighter fans, finally some good news. After several years and couple of updates, Capcom is ready to move on. After the success of Street Fighter 5, the company has officially announced Street Fighter 6.

Official Capcom sources state that more info on this brand new release will be coming this summer. Unfortunately there are no more news regarding the game. It’s coming, and that’s about all we know.

An interesting note is that Street Fighter 6 will be developed with the involvement of longtime Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono. He left Capcom last year after putting in impressive 30 years with the company.

In related news, “Mega Man” series producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya has been placed in charge of Street Fighter, too.

Of course, the real question is whether or not this game will appear on Microsoft and Nintendo consoles, or if it will be a PlayStation exclusive, as Street Fighter 5 was. The reason as to why the previous game was made exclusive to PS4, was because Sony and Capcom have “the same vision for the growth potential in the fighting space”.

Capcom will celebrate 35th anniversary from releasing the iconic fighting game franchise called Street Fighter. The first game was released in 1987 followed by five other main series games. But the most popular rendition of this game is non other than the best-selling 1991 release Street Fighter II.

Street Fighter is one of the highest grossing video game franchises of all time. It has sold $47 million units world wide as of September 2021.

Street Fighter Trailer

The 35 second trailer from this awesome game is just not enough. But, there are a couple of takeaways that we can spot.

Logo

The trailer starts by showing off the new logo. Yes, Capcom decided to change up the logo. Although each rendition of the game has a slightly different feeling to it. This new logo is completely different. It looks nothing alike, compared to its predecessors.

Like it or not, I think we can all agree that at least this logo is visually distinct.

If you don’t have much to show, promote low key

However, Capcom decided that it needs a countdown. Usually when there is a countdown, you have to deliver upon that. And this obviously isn’t it. Something as big as Street Fighter 6 deserves something a lot more, in terms of announcement. Unfortunately this doesn’t cut it. We needed to be shocked and awed.

If you want to stay on top of everyone’s minds until the summer of 2022 you must do a lot more than a 35 second trailer.

The Visual Style

If the teaser is something to go by it is obvious that the game heads for more Tekken game style. We were expecting a little more realistic vibe, but at least is not as cartoony as Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter 5. This is good, because this rendition needed to distinguish itself from its predecessors.

Ryu

This fictional Japanese fighting character, which is the main protagonist of Capcom’s Street Fighter series – is getting a redesign. To be honest this is a long time coming. Capcom moved past the Street Fighter 2 Ryu design.

Luke

Until the official release of the game, we can only speculate as to who is the main character of this version. It seems like that could potentially be Luke. He also seems to be a little bit redesigned. It seems like his hair was changed a little bit. Again, this could be due to the art style of the game itself. But, if definitely looks a lot better than its previous rendition.

In this short trailer we can also hear his voice. But. it’s just a short line at the beginning of the video.

Gameplay

This trailer doesn’t show any actual gameplay. But, the short teaser revealed a beefed-up Ryu as he faces Luke. This character was introduced in Street Fighter 5 and obviously, he will continue on his journey in this new release.

The main focus I think should be on the art. Because it has a more realistic art style than the previous games in the series. Well, at least as realistic as one can expect.

Street Fighter 5 looked and played great when it came out for PS4 and PC in 2016. But, it suffered from a dearth of content as well as bugs and server issues. We can only hope that Capcom learned from its mistakes, and the release of Street Fighter 6 will not have any issues.

It seems like Capcom will be using RE Engine, although there are no official information regarding that statement. But, since all latest game releases are targeting that particular engine, it is a pretty safe assumption.

This would also explain the approach towards more photorealism. RE Engine can scan objects from the real world into it to create lifelike textures.

For a game like this real actors and models are used. Real people could be providing the faces for Ryu, Luke and the rest of the characters now too.

Capcom Fighting Collection

Capcom also announced the Capcom Fighting Collection, an anthology of 10 classic titles. This collection will be released on June 24, 2022, for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and XBox One.

It includes the following titles:

  • Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
  • Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
  • Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
  • Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire
  • Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire
  • Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition
  • Red Earth
  • Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix (Pocket Fighter)
  • Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

Stats

Overall Capcom had a great financial year, given the current global situation. Their net sales increased 32% year over year. Operating income and net income are both seeing similar boosts as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

But, this increase is largely attributed to game sales with Resident Evil 3.

Conclusion

If Capcom keeps up with previous expectations, we can expect the launch date of Street Fighter pretty soon. Currently, there is no information on which platforms this game can run, but seeing as the tease trailer is available in 4K, they’ll likely be at least aiming for the more powerful consoles. That would be PlayStation 5 and perhaps XBox Series X|S.

Street Fighter 6 appears to be running on the RE Engine, which was used to create and run Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter Rise and most of Capcom’s recent releases.

We are left with nothing more, except to wait. So, are you a fan of the Street Fighter franchise? What are your thoughts on the latest tease?
