How to Fix scroll lag on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and others. Here are some browser extensions to help deal with it!

Browsers are one of the most constantly updated software due to the nature of their work. Web standards undergo revisions continually, bringing up the need for constant changes to keep up with them. Aside from this, updates are also rolled out to patch security holes and fix bugs.

While updates like these are mostly the behind-the-scenes kind and you may not even see the process take place at all, some do result in issues for a few. Various factors such as broken compatibility, system issues, and cache troubles can result in performance problems. Most of these can be fixed by performing nothing but reboot or an app re-installation. But there are times when lags persist – and are especially noticeable while scrolling.

In this article, we will be exploring ways to smoothen out scroll lag across various browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, and Brave on Windows machines, from the browser-end itself without making any system-level changes. Multiple browser extensions are available for this purpose. While these have only been tested on Windows, they will likely be working on Linux and macOS too.

Fix scroll lag issue on Chrome, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, and Brave (Chromium-based browsers):

1. Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller

This neat little extension is a port of another from Firefox and makes scroll behavior extremely smooth. It seems to do its job by freeing scrolling from the scroll-wheel a bit and slightly altering its behavior. A bounce effect has also been added for overscrolling scenarios, making scrolling appear almost as slick as on a mobile device.

Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller

But if you do not like its default behavior, then Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller also offers a dynamically plotted curve using which you can customize it to your heart’s content.

To download the extension, and fix your scroll lag issue, head over to this Chrome Web Store link.

2. Logitech Smooth Scrolling

This extension is developed by none other than Logitech and works similarly to the one above, except for one thing – it is for Logitech mice and touchpads only. Web pages typically scroll in choppy three-line increments. With Smooth Scrolling, web pages will glide across your screen in single-pixel increments, again making scrolling as smooth as it is on a smartphone.

To install the extension, head over to its Chrome Web Store page. But before that, make sure you have Logitech SetPoint software 6.60 and above installed as well. Do note that the extension is incompatible with gaming mice.

3. SmoothScroll

Another great alternative to Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller is SmoothScroll, which again works in a very similar manner. It promises “iOS-like smooth scrolling” and supports all input devices, whether it’s the mouse wheel, middle mouse, touchpad, or keyboard.

Fix scroll lag issue on Firefox:

Firefox doesn’t use the Chromium base and is actually one of the last remaining browsers to do so. It is instead based on the Quantum browser engine, automatically making the extensions given above incompatible. Fortunately, Firefox has got a couple of its own and we have listed them below.

1. Yet Another Smooth Scrolling WE

YASS is what the Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller extension discussed above is based on. It, therefore, works in an identical manner and supports both arrow keys and mouse scroll-wheel.

To install YASS, head over to this Firefox Browser Add-ons page.

2. Logitech Smooth Scrolling

This one again is developed by Logitech and is the Firefox version of the Logitech Smooth Scrolling extension discussed above. To install Logitech Smooth Scrolling, head over to this Firefox Browser Add-ons page.

These are some of the ways on how to fix scroll lag issues on the most popular browsers. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
